The Future
For those of you who have followed our music and remain our support – I write these words…
Dear Friends:
2007 proved to be a year of triumph and heartache – the closest point to realizing our dreams and yet the furthest away we have ever felt. It seemed with every advance the destination became increasingly blurry.
The year began with great hope – the talk of recording our first full-length record and embarking on a series of tours was the primary objective. In May, after months of rehearsing and writing, the recording process ensued. We set up shop at the palatial Ocean Way Studios in downtown Nashville and began the two-month process of recording "the act of becoming". Though the actual "tracking” of the record took only seventeen days, the mix and mastering consumed the remainder. We had recently returned from SXSW and were anxious to put our excitement on tape. The future was beginning to look promising – or so we thought.
Every turn seemed to supply a new obstacle and only days before recording was to begin our funding for the album was pulled. It was another blow in a laundry list of disappointments. Never prone to giving up, we scraped enough money together to begin the record – not knowing where the rest of the budget would come from - we moved forward. I remember feeling as though we had no choice. It was "do or die". We had spent the last year and a half performing songs from a record (pieces vol. I) we felt no longer represented what we were as a band. Now we had to prove we could recreate that magic in the confines of four walls.
The process of recording "the act" was an amazing experience but unfortunately severely tainted by the pressures of trying to keep our finances on track. I walked away from those sessions feeling extremely secure in what we had created but utterly exhausted from the journey.
A sigh of relief was exhaled, when in the eleventh hour our investor supplied the remaining balance for the recording costs. Through a series of events concerning our then manager, the relationship with our primary investor of a year had become strained and Matt and myself were forced to take matters into our own hands. We are forever grateful to a man who took a chance on us and continues to believe in our future.
With the record complete and a fall tour on the books, we looked forward to doing what we love more than anything – connecting with an audience. The plans for a high profile, media-heavy tour appeared to be fail-proof. We set the independent release date for "the act of becoming" to coincide with the first date of the tour – September 18, 2007 in Los Angeles, CA. All was well.
On September 1st our management called to set up an immediate meeting and my stomach sank. I had returned the day before from a week out of the States and had no idea of what was coming. Our manager told us that the company who was sponsoring the tour had been forced to close its doors (due to internal conflict) and our tour had been cancelled. We left the meeting shell-shocked and bewildered. This was the third tour that had been cancelled for one reason or another and was to be the launch for our new record. We had once again hit a wall.
We were convinced to keep the opening date in Los Angeles and use it as a showcase for labels and publishing companies. Being independent, the responsibility of paying for this showcase fell on us. Needless to say it was a pretty penny. Without going into ugly details, the trip was a disaster from start to finish. Without proper promotion and solid industry presence we played to a handful (and I mean HANDFUL) of people and left the stage completely defeated. We had spent an enormous amount of money to play a thirty minute set in front of some of Matt's closest friends – it was our lowest point.
Upon returning to Nashville we made the decision to part ways with our manager of almost three years. The last several months have been a haze of questions and searching. I think if you talk to most musicians the goal is to affect. Affect the world around them – connect through words and melody – somehow make a difference. I say that not as cliché but in heart's truth. Our goal in this journey is not to dominate the top of the charts or become "the next big thing” – whatever that means. It is to somehow connect.
I write this - leaving you with no question to our current state. We are not quitting nor have we given up. We are instead stepping back – taking stock – hibernating for a season. Some of us will try our hand at solo outings and other collaborations - others will continue to write in hopes the connection with you continues. There is no time frame or schedule on the books for a new lynden record. "the act” is still an infant – the possibilities are endless. We play, for the first time by ear.
There are several things still on the horizon and we will keep you up to date as life proceeds. Today we give something new – a remix of "why (please tell me)” from one of my favorite producers, Robert Marvin. You can listen to it in it's
entirety here (both the instrumental & full version have been posted - click on the "albums" tab and select the first "cover") or on our myspace page.
Later this year our music will become the backdrop for several Movies and Television Series &ndash we will make sure to let you know when to watch.
From all of us to ALL of you – thank you. Your emails and kind words have been greatly appreciated and are never taken with a grain.
May the New Year bring happiness, growth and a better understanding of who you are – why you're here. In a world that is obsessed with self – be the difference.
God Bless
Coury, Matt, Chris, Jono & Evan
